Why I use disposable dinnerware when I care about the environment.

Let’s face it…it’s already made, right?  If I don’t buy it, someone else will.  Sure, I don’t like padding the pockets of the companies that make it, but they’re just in business and capitalism and all that, right?

So it does kind of pain me, but I’d go insane without it during this season of my life.  I buy 16oz plastic cups, 8″ paper plates and the 360-pack of plastic cutlery from Sam’s.  I try to get the kids to re-use their water cups but it’s an exercise in futility most days.  It does save me 1-2 loads of dishes per day and that has a cost…water, water heat, detergent and most of all…labor time.  We run the dishwasher at least once daily as is, and it more than doubles when we don’t use disposables.  I don’t like it, but I’m over the constant dishwashing drudgery, even with the kids helping.  If I cook a decent meal for dinner, we use the real stuff, so usually disposables are reserved for snacks, breakfast, lunch and light dinners.  I’m ok with it.  You gotta do whatever it takes to remove stress where you can.  The cost?  About $30 per month.  Worth it.
