money

Remember, we’re only human.

May 21, 2014 by michelejo Leave a Comment

I recently had a string of bad experiences on Ebay.

I’ve been a member for over 15 years so what happened kind of shocked me.  But what shocked me even more was the way people reacted and treated me.

I had a ton of Proactiv products I wasn’t using (too much auto-ship) so I decided to sell them before the expired and went to waste.

It seemed like a good idea at the time–and I was happy to make a little extra money.

I listed my auctions and decided to give each buyer the choice of “economy” shipping for $3 or Priority for $5.75.   Ebay’s system told me that economy would be parcel select and take 2-8 days for delivery.  For some reason, when my customers went through check-out, Ebay told them instead that they’d receive their items within 2 business days.  Every single buyer chose economy.  Since my listing gave me up to 2 business days to ship even before the clock would be ticking on shipping time, this caused a lot of confusion and then consternation among those who purchased from me.

Adding insult to injury, my local USPS office did not do origin scans, so none of my tracking numbers appeared in their system until packages were well on their way and well into that up to 8 day shipping time.  Some weren’t scanned until delivery. I received a negative feedback after just five days, despite having politely communicated with those worried purchasers while they were waiting…and lots more angry, accusatory e-mail messages. They accused me of not shipping until 8 days after I shipped.  They accused me of sending unsealed packages so they could extort me into refunding them and allowing them to keep their products.  They accused me of deliberately shorting them on quantity.

Ebay will not back me up as it seems I have no proof that the shipping estimates I was shown varied from what the customers were shown.

During the week or so that  I was in limbo waiting on that 8 business day shipping time, I got no fewer than 2-3 irate messages a day.  Every time my phone would ding to alert me, my heart would skip a beat and my stomach would knot.  Being accused of being a liar, a thief and a fraud cut deep to my core–especially since it quickly was obvious I would have no way of defending myself or protecting myself.  I ended up refunding two people just to make them go away–they were the meanest of all and they knew what they were doing.  They actually lied to extort me–and they won.  I sat in my office, coughing and sick, clicking “refund” because I didn’t have the strength to argue.

I am not saying I am perfect or beyond making a mistake. I’ve made mistakes.  I’ve shipped late or shipped the wrong item.  And when a mistake is brought to my attention, I will bend over backwards to make it right.  Past mistakes have led to me being very careful when I sell online and I’m quite certain that the error this time wasn’t mine.  I’m a human being though and even if I did mess up, I don’t deserve to be berated and told I’m trash–just because I’m not perfect. I think it would do us all well to take a breath and  remember that there is another human being on the other end…even when we’re just dealing with someone we know only online.

Emergency meal planning…

March 5, 2014 by michelejo Leave a Comment

I’ve mentioned before that my family recently suffered a 35% pay cut.  We had no notice and a tiny bit of severance, and this all started during the holidays and just a couple months after we closed on our home.  We had some legal issues related to the home we were leasing and we’d just plunked down the bulk of the remainder of our emergency fund to retain legal help.  We had to drop the case after the lay-off.  The timing of everything just really was all wrong.

I recently started a new business doing custom vinyl graphics and lettering.  I started it mostly for fun and now I’m doing it out of necessity, hoping to grow it into a supplemental income that will actually help our family.  I’m OK with this, because I LOVE IT and I’ve expanded into a Sign Shop rather than “just” a sticker shop!  I’m doing OK, but still really stuck at that stage where everything I make gets reinvested, plus a little more at times.  I’m still buying necessary supplies and already find myself in need of a larger cutting machine and a wide format color printer, which is another chunk of money.

We’re OK…the mortgage is paid…but I find myself in the uncomfortable position of doing some juggling to keep the other bills paid.  We’re expecting a bonus that should allow us to get caught up but in the meantime, I’ve been examining our spending to figure out what else we can cut.

I discovered that our largest expenditure monthly is still food.  We definitely are still spending way too much money eating out and way too much at the grocery store.  It’s amazing how $5 here and $15 there can REALLY add up in a month’s time.  I estimated we were spending $200 per month on fast food and in reality it was more like $400-500 per month if I count the times my hubby eats lunch out for work.  Add in actual sit-down restaurants and OUCH!

As far as groceries go, I’ve been experimenting shopping different places to see how much less I can spend and I’ve determined that Sam’s and Costco really are my best bet for the things I can buy at those stores, as long as we don’t waste any of what we buy.  (That’s a big IF…it’s really hard to use up the fresh produce even though I’m trying!)  I’ve given up most organics 🙁 but I have gone back to organic milk, although when I am at Sam’s I *will* buy their regular milk since it’s hormone/antibiotic-free.  The regular milk at my local grocery choices (Super Target and Super Walmart usually) just is not fresh enough for me and often tastes as though it’s already “turned” when we open it.  But enough about my snobby milk tastes and back to “How can I spend very little on food over the next couple months?”

There are great “emergency” meal plans online, but they either assume you have ingredients on hand that I don’t already have, or they are set up for you to shop for everything you need, which for me isn’t quite what I need, because I have a LOT in my pantry.  I just am not sure of how to put it together!  If my pantry and fridge were completely bare, I’d follow Hillbilly Housewife’s plan but thankfully for us, we’ve got stuff sitting around that we can use if we can figure out how to use it!

While I’m not a stockpiler, I am very guilty of buying certain foods and letting them languish in my pantry till they’re too old to use or I give up and give them away in a purge because I can’t think of a way to use them.  I have a big sack of lentils purchased online that are doing that VERY thing!

Since I’m visual and tactile, my plan of attack involved taking those things that I want to use OUT of my pantry and setting them out on the kitchen table.  From there I was able to create a meal plan based on what I saw and then put the items back, but only after I wrote down what I had, so I could remember to actually USE those things.

The really nice part is that everything I use from the pantry or freezer is basically FREE to me at this point!  (Yes, I know I once bought the stuff but most of it has been there at least 6 months and will feed us without taking any $$ out of our current budget.)

My other money-saving food idea is to give in and buy some of the convenience foods I’d long ago given up.  I’ve got two teenagers (and a husband) to feed and they are perfectly happy to chow down on canned raviolis, frozen pizzas, boxed cereal or Kraft mac and cheese when they are hungry and in a hurry.  As great as meal-planning and slow cookers are, I just can’t ALWAYS have something perfectly wholesome and healthful ready to grab at just the right moment.  All the time.  If I were anywhere near perfect, I probably could figure it out, but I’m not.  I am still struggling.

Hungry kids on the run lead to fast food visits that aren’t planned; packaged and convenience foods are cheaper, plain and simple.  I try to limit these, of course, and I keep some healthy and quick (good quality protein bars, nuts, trail mix, fruit, cut up veggies) on hand also.  I just would rather the kids eat a few $1 cans of raviolis than get find myself talked into am unplanned $28 Chik-Fil-A visit on the nights were in the car running from dance to music to whatever.

I did really well for about a week but I’ve caved quite a few times in the last several days.  We did Chik-Fil-A (times 2), Rubios (times 3) and Taco Bell (times 3).  Well, it’s only the 6th of the month, so if I’m “good” from now on, I can forgive myself.

A Year of Less: February Plans and Progress

February 11, 2013 by michelejo Leave a Comment

So with January’s No-Spend turned Low-Spend experiment behind us, I’ve been decompressing a bit so far in February.  I honestly cannot believe we’re practically halfway through this month!

I’m still definitely working on our Year of Less.  I am working hard to be mindful about each and every penny I spend.  instead of the old “see it, want it, buy it” mentality, I’ve been doing a “see it, want it, ask myself if I truly need it” mentality.  This involves envisioning how useful it really will be, analyzing its cost versus its usefulness and being really honest with myself about whether I really need it or if I simply want to need it (in order to justify getting it).  Then if I still think I should get it, I make a mental note to mull it over for a few weeks and then get it later if I still need it.  That gives me time to price shop and wait for a sale or coupon.

I’ve been doing this for quite some time.  I’ve talked myself out of buying a Silhouette Cameo and a new gas grill for months with this method.  My conclusion is that I don’t really *need* either.  The grill certainly seems like more of a necessity than the Cameo;  I can actually make a case for needing a grill.  (Since I really crave real grilled chicken–not faux-grilled in my George Foreman–in my primal-friendly salads that make up the core of my daytime diet when I’m eating right.)  But ultimately, I can still cook chicken without the grill.

But I do think that having a grill would enhance my quality of life so I did decide to buy one.  But when?  My decision on that has been to purchase a grill at the end of February so long as no other unexpected/large expenses come up.

Part of this plan is to clean up and sell my George Foreman Evolve, not because I’ll get that much money for it, but because I just don’t have space in our smallish kitchen for all the small appliances I have.  So getting an outdoor grill will allow me to clear out all the space that the Evolve and it’s accessories take up!  (I have waffle plates, grill plates, omelet plates, cupcake plates and cake plates…most of which have never been used!)  I will probably sell a few other unused or rarely used gadgets while I’m at it.  I have a never-used juicer, for instance.  It’s not that I don’t like the idea of juicing.  I do.  I may start doing it regularly some day.  But after trying and returning several disappointing expensive juicers, I bought a cheap one with a really narrow chute.  And because of that flaw, I don’t use it.  I don’t have the patience to cut all my veggies into slender pieces when I factor in all the clean-up juicing involves.  I’d be better off reclaiming my space for now and if I really want to juice again in the future, I can pay better attention to features when choosing a machine.

But back to the Cameo–I almost did click BUY on that one during Silhouette’s amazing Black Friday sale.  It was the best deal but I knew that I had a house that still wasn’t completely unpacked, still needed to be organized and decorated and that heading into the holidays I was not going to have time to learn and use the Cameo.  I pictured it sitting with my sewing machines and many other unused craft items for months on end until I finally could get to a place where I felt justify spending time doing something *just for fun.*  Since we’re almost in the middle of February and I’m *still not there* I think my decision to hold off on the Cameo was a good one!

Spending isn’t the only facet of having a Year of Less.  Getting rid of things is another huge part of that.  I’ve been decluttering and re-organizing and purging.  I’m putting into practice all the tips and advice I’ve gleaned from books and blogs over the past several years.  One big thing that helps me is to put things where I’ll see and remember them rather than where they’ll be prettiest (can you tell I’ve read a bunch of books about organizing for people with ADD?).  I got new hampers and put them right under the towel rack in the master bath.  Suddenly I’m washing hubby’s clothes before he runs out and has to scavenge for things to wear in the AM!  I hung a clipboard for my Monthly Bill Payment Record right beside my desk!

I’ve done similar things in my bathroom and am implementing these types of systems in other areas of the house. I’m keeping a list of supplies I need for certain organizational ideas and instead of rushing out and buying everything, I’m spacing it out and buying what I need for one project at a time.  That way I don’t buy stuff and have it sit around (or even worse….get lost!) before I get to it.  Hubby also has gotten on board and has made amazing progress organizing and purging the garage and shed.

Things are shaping up…2013 is going to be a great year!

***FREE*** Monthly Bill Payment Record

February 9, 2013 by michelejo Leave a Comment

I created this chart in Microsoft Publisher but for those you don’t have Publisher, I’ve included a PDF copy.  You can simply fill it in by hand monthly, edit it in Publisher or fill in the names of your bills and due dates and then scan or copy it to make additional copies.  🙂

I keep my charts on a clipboard that hangs on a clear Command hook next to my desk and each new month, I just add a new one on top of the stack, so I can flip through if I need to look up something from a previous month.

This way I easily see it daily and can make sure I don’t forget to pay things.  Since I have ADD, I have a terrible time remembering to pay things on time!  This could be one’s only system for remembering, but I do have other systems on well.  I just find that redundancy is good for me! 😀  Our others systems and filing cabinet reside in our office where my husband can keep an eye on things; this chart is just for my peace of mind.  My desk is in our bedroom, so I’ve got my info right there and see it even if I don’t have reason to venture into the office!

***I was unable to upload the Publisher version due to security restrictions in WordPress.  If you need that version, please e-mail me and I’ll send it back as an attachment. 🙂
