Tumaro’s, will you be my Valentine?

I do love bread.  Like, really, really love it.  It’s hard living a lifestyle where most bread is off-limits most of the time.  I also hadn’t had such a great experience with low-carb bread products in the past.  So I was skeptical when I was shopping a few days ago at Sprout’s and I came across Tumaro’s brand “LowinCarbs” tortillas (or wraps as I usually use them).

I chose the Garden Vegetable flavor because it has the least calories, carbs and most fiber.  They are 95% fat-free and contain 2g of fat, 11g of carb, 7g of dietary fiber and 6g of protein–which works out to 2 PointsPLUS.  They also only contain 60 calories per 8″ tortilla.  At my store they are $3.59 for a 10-count package, which is darned reasonable for a low-carb, or “diet” product.

I used my first tortilla to make a chicken quesadilla.  It was yummy.  I grilled chicken breast tenderloin pieces (I prefer these to whole or half–breasts and they are always sold boneless/skinless) on my Griddler (like a George Foreman grill but with other applications–like panini press–and with removable plates) and used a double-serving of low-fat cheese, light sour cream, fire-roasted salsa (Sprout’s brand is my fave) and some sauteed veggies I had on hand–broccoli, zucchini and yellow squash.  It was quite good, and gave me a glimmer of hope on a very difficult day 3 of my new diet lifestyle change.  And it was only about 7 points…the same as a Lean Pocket but much more nutritious and filling.

I’ve also made myself several sandwich “wraps” which also are amazingly delicious.  I’m not even missing real bread (yet!) and I’d rather have one tortilla than 2 pieces of double-fiber bread when I have a sandwich.  2oz of lean, low-sodium thin-sliced deli-style honey ham (I like Hillshire Farms), half a tomato sliced, a leaf of romaine torn, some low-fat Best Foods mayo and a couple spritzes and Wishbone’s ranch-flavored Salad Spritzers.  These wraps turn out to be around 5 points and are darned filling.
